Surrender is just the kind of Amanda Quick book that her fans have come to expect. Her hero and heroine are decent, likable, witty people, with strong values, that you'd love to meet in real life.

In this story, the hero, Lucas Colebrook, has an ulterior motive for meeting the heroine, Victoria Huntington (she's rich; he needs money to keep his family estate). He "woos" her through her desire for adventure, by taking her with him to places where women normally can't go. Of course, this has to be done under cover of darkness, with her dressed in men's clothing, but what the heck, she's a '90s kind of girl (1790..1820..something like that).

Victoria is not interested in marriage as she just wants to have fun (and what girl doesn't, I ask you...) however, she and Lucas get caught in a compromising situation, which really isn't much of a surprise considering the risks they've been taking. The result is, as you might guess, marriage for this twosome. Not so bad as Victoria has realized that she's in love with Lucas.

But wait...a crisis develops. On the morning of their marriage, Lady Jessica Atherton comes to see Victoria. She assures Victoria that she will do what she can to keep gossip surrounding Victoria's hurried wedding to a minimum. At this point, the birdbrain Jessica spills the beans about Lucas's past offer of marriage to her (Jessica) and his subsequent request to her for help in securing a "suitable heiress"; one who can hostess for him, bear his children, and who knows her duty. As you can imagine, Victoria is furious and hurt that Lucas has seemingly tricked her into what looks to be a loveless, duty-filled marriage. Of course, the fact that he's discussed her with another woman, a past love no less, doesn't help anything. When Lucas sees her, a few minutes after this stunning meeting, he realizes that he's in real trouble and has his work cut out for him in salvaging this relationship. He knows Victoria is strong and will hang onto her "mad" for a significant piece of time.

Do read this story to find out how Victoria and Lucas work their way through this situation to find both love and happiness together (yes, he really loves her, too. Are you surprised? Not).

I recommend this book to you.
