A Rating of A
Letitia Thornquist is a midwestern librarian and what the heck is she
doing trying to be president of a company? She knows nothing about how
a company works but she’s willing to learn and learn she will because
she needs to do something more with her life. She’s had it rough
lately, a new step-mother nearer her own age than her father’s age, her
Uncle Charlie’s death and an ex-fiance whom she’s caught in a
compromising situation. Life needs to change and here’s her start.
Joel Blackstone is angry. He’s run Thornquist Gear Inc. for the past
ten
years as it’s CEO. He and Letty’s Uncle Charlie had an understanding
... an agreement. He was going to buy Charlie Thornquist out. It’s
what he’s worked all these years for. He’s the brains behind Thornquist
Gear; he’s the man who took a little neighborhood sporting goods store
from anonymity and made it into a household word. And now, Charlie’s
dead, the will’s been read and he’s back to square one.
Okay, so, he’s got to teach the new President of Thornquist Gear the
ropes. Okay, he can do that, grudgingly albeit, but he can.
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, this wide-eyed innocent, mussed
piece of womanhood, for some reason, turns his crank and he’s having a
hard time staying mad at Charlie and at Letty. His goose is cooked and
he knows it but he’s also got a grudge to take care of. He’s got a
takeover in the works that will bring certain people from his past to
their knees. It’s within his grasp and now ... now, Letty’s in the
way.
And then, there’s Letty’s ex-fiance; a more pompous man you’ll never
come across. If Joel could just have 15 minutes with this man down a
back alley, he’d give him a good whomp up the side of his head and make
him see life from a different perspective. Imagine letting himself be
caught with his pants down in front of Letty. The man deserves more
than just a whomp up the side of the head but Letty just won’t let Joel
step in and handle the situation. And why is everybody telling her she
should seek psychiatric help for her problems? Joel knows there’s
nothing wrong with her sexually, why does everybody else think there
is? She’s one hot little number, this midwestern librarian and that
pompous ass isn’t going to get Letty or his company, not if Joel
Blackstone has anything to say about it.
This book is pure Krentz at her very best. It’s light hearted, funny
and poignant at the same time and I loved every word of it. Most of
Krentz’s books have been keepers for me and when I read such good
writing again, I realize why I kept the book. Letty is a great heroine
and she knows how to keep Joel in his place. He might think he’s boss
but she knows better. He might think that he can toss her a few crumbs
and make her believe that she’s doing something constructive for the
company but he doesn’t know her very well, does he?
This book is one not to be missed. The relationship between Joel and
Letty is pure sensuality on every level. The story carries quickly,
smoothly; there’s never a dull moment between these two. While Joel
thinks he’s CEO, Letty has a few life lessons to teach Joel about love
and laughter and how to treat a woman right. I know why I gave this
book an "A" the first time I read it many years ago. A second read
didn’t make me change my mind either. Joel is pure male chauvinist and
Letty is pure woman rolled into a mussy, fussy, little curvy package to
keep Joel interested and on his toes.
If you want a great day of reading, pick up this book and start right
here, right now. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
